The VDN Requirement for Car Dealers and Workshops

What does the VDN requirement mean for car dealers and workshops?

On November 1, 2025, two new product declarations (VDN) were launched for the automotive trade: a completely new, tailored declaration for electric vehicles and an updated version for other vehicles. The declarations have been developed in close collaboration between the Swedish Motor Trade Association (MRF) and the Swedish Consumer Agency to meet today’s requirements for clear information and increased consumer protection.

For the first time, electric vehicles have their own product declaration—a long-awaited development that sets a new standard for how electric vehicles should be assessed, presented, and valued in the Swedish market. The result is increased transparency, strengthened trust, and better business for all parties.

The new VDN requirement (product declaration) for used electric vehicles aims to create a clear, secure, and comparable decision-making basis that strengthens both car dealers and consumers in the trade of used electric vehicles.

Increased Security in the Used Car Market

Since the car battery is the most valuable component in an electric vehicle, higher requirements are now placed on documentation of the battery’s state of health at the time of sale. By reporting the battery’s state of health (State of Health, SoH), better conditions are created for correct pricing and reduced uncertainty between seller and buyer.

For car dealers and workshops, this means a clearer responsibility—but also an opportunity to work more systematically, professionally, and commercially with used electric vehicles.

Why is the battery’s state of health central to the VDN?

The battery’s condition affects range, performance, and resale value. Without objective measurement data, the valuation risks becoming uncertain or questioned. The VDN requirement addresses this by clarifying the need for standardized and verifiable information about the battery’s status.

With DEKRA’s patented battery test, you receive an independent basis that supports the VDN requirement and strengthens your role as a professional operator.

How can DEKRA’s battery test help you meet the VDN requirement?

DEKRA’s battery test is developed to meet the market’s and regulations’ increased requirements for transparency. The patented and independent test measures the battery’s state of health quickly and efficiently and provides a result that is directly comparable between different car models and manufacturers. The tests can be performed on-site at your facility, which provides full control over the process and streamlines daily operations.

  • Provides objective and independent data in used car trading.
  • Enables fair and comparable pricing of electric vehicles.
  • Helps meet new product declaration requirements (VDN).
  • Can be performed by your staff directly at your facility.
  • Strengthens trust with customers and end buyers.

Part of DEKRA’s Long-Term Electric Vehicle Initiative

DEKRA is making long-term investments in battery testing and electrified mobility. In 2025, an advanced battery testing center was inaugurated at Lausitzring in Germany—a central part of the development of DEKRA’s battery tests for electric vehicles in traffic.

The collaboration with MRF in Sweden and DBFU in Denmark demonstrates that the solution meets market needs from an international perspective as well.
